I love lamp

Why are lamps so dang expensive?  The fiance and I just got back from registering at Crate and Barrel where I (naively) said "Let's register for a couple of lamps for the living room and our bedroom."  Everywhere I looked in the upstairs section, I saw a lamp that would look great in some corner, but the cheapest one was $169.99!  Disheartened, I sought similar pieces for less and found what I think to be perfectly adequate lamps for under $100
