Overthinking the mantel

I've got a lot of projects in the queue now that I'm done moving.  They are, in no particular order:
And you would think that that's enough to focus on, but no.  I have to start obsessing over what to put on our mantel.  I want a collection things that go, but don't necessarily match.  Kind of like these:

Eventually, I want to find a cool accent mirror like these (all from homedecorators.com):

However, in the meantime I've tried to arrange some things I already have and see how I like it.  Right now I rate it a 5 or 6.  I'll be adding new things as I find them, but I can't think of what to put in that empty spot on the bottom.   Thoughts?

  1. I think you need a bigger picture(or two)in basic frames... looks pretty cool so far though!!! How fun. :)

  2. Can you sit your frame on your mantel or lower it so it appears to be resting on it? I do like the frame you have and you might try it off-centered to balance the vase & flowers?? Incorporate some other colors from the rest of your room maybe with a picture in a colorful frame from your wedding:)

  3. I think I'd either sit your mirror on the mantle or lower it quite a bit. Then I'd move that little picture to the right side and put a larger picture in front of the mirror on the left side. Maybe move the turquoise vase thing to the left near the flowers? That might be a little clustered, but you never know til you try right? I don't know what the other colors are in that room? I'm feeling a big solid yellow vase somewhere on there...

  4. Yeah, I put the mirror on an existing nail but prefer it resting on the mantel. I'll play around with moving it to one side and bringing in more color. At this point, the room is going to have a good bit of blue but I've yet to pick curtain fabric and I want them to be pretty high impact so that will influence the palette for sure.

I dont want to buy anything, but will keep rummaging around my boxes of junk. I don't love anything up there except my little blue Paris painting.
