5 Things Friday

Wow, what a long week it has been!  Hopefully yours was great, and the next will be even better.  Until then, here are five random things I deemed worth sharing today:

1. N and I watched The Newsroom last night (new show on HBO) and it was awesome.  If you like Aaron Sorkin style scripts (quick, witty dialogue) the you should tune in.  I have no idea whether it's realistic or not, but it makes journalism seem as though it could be noble again.

2. Last weekend, my husband put the finishing touches on our new wine bar in what was formerly a small, empty alcove in our dining area.  It matches the kitchen perfectly (installed by previous owners) and he poured the cement countertop himself (with some help from yours truly).  We're excited to have some of our kitchen cabinets back and I've had way more wine than usual this week because I can.  I'm so proud of his mad DIY skills!

(Excuse the phone pic with wine fridge box in the background)

3.  Need a baby gift for a little girl and want to spend under $20?  I'll let you in on my secret - pillowcase dresses in graphic fabric from Blake & Bailey on Etsy.  You can't procrastinate since the dresses are custom made, but they're only $15 and always a hit with new moms.  Plus, the dresses are totally adjustable so the top can be stretched out as the girl grows and it will turn into a shirt when she's taller.

4. I have been in the mood for a DIY project all week long, but unwilling to spend much or risk making another mess to clean up.  However, I think this project is just the ticket for the boring nightstand in our guest room.

5. Last week I found a great black maxi skirt with a foldover waist (so it's not too long) for $24 at Nordstrom Rack and I am 100% converted, all doubts gone.  Here's how I've already worn it (nothing revolutionary, but new to me).

Hope your weekend is great!  See you next week!

I Still Love Teal Paint

Some of you may recall my beloved teal accent wall and bookshelves, currently sporting Martha Stewart Plumage paint.  I still love the color, and have a bucket of it sitting in my garage just begging me to paint something else.

Luckily, there is lots of inspiration on Pinterest:

I'm thinking I need to integrate some orange.  Which room was your favorite?

P.S. N is turning 30 today!  I doubt I'll be blogging tonight, but if you know him in real life send him a little note on Facebook.  ;-)  You know he'll love it!

I'm Impressed, Ivanka! + True Blood Chatter

I think I'm probably stating the obvious when I say that most celebrity fashion lines are usually a joke.  The Olsen Twins and Nicole Richie aside, most model/actresses don't actually design the items with their names on them, and merely look over the finished products to make sure the line doesn't contain anything they'd be embarrassed to wear.  That said, I was not paying much attention to Ivanka Trump's foray into career-minded footwear until I stumbled across these babies on Polyvore:

Ivanka branched out, y'all!  I was expecting to see sensible round toe pumps, and definitely not aqua chevron wedge sandals.  At this point, I don't care who designed these... I want some.  The price is a little high for me ($100-150) but there are currently 732 pairs on eBay.  Someone just created a new saved search...

And now for the reason why about 10 of you clicked through from Blogger:

We have now spent 1/4 of True Blood Season 5 waiting for something really big to happen.

We get that Tara doesn't want to be a vampire, and we've seen her run around angry for 3 episodes now.  Sookie and Lala chase her around, and now we are to believe she's going to die in a tanning bed.  Obviously Pam is going to save her and be a responsible maker, and I hope that is the start of something entertaining.

Speaking of Pam, I love the scene where she was made.  I think that her forcing Eric to turn her was really genius of the writers, and it adds a new layer of interest to their relationship and hers with Tara (probably).  Also, that kimono was gorgeous - too bad it got all bloody.  However, I think it was far too much of a coincidence that Bill and Lorena just happened to be there eating some whores.

Jason and his teacher getting it on when he was a student explains SO much.  I hope he gets a chance to have a decent story arc and be more than comic relief or a victim, because up until now I don't think anyone ever really thought he was capable of actual feelings.  Here's hoping he and Hoyt patch things up before Hoyt cuts his wrists and listens to some emo.

I don't know about y'all, but it seems like Salome is the mole within the Authority but they make it a little too obvious so I am skeptical.  I think Nora's confession was probably genuine, but how Salome realized that Bill and Eric are true mainstreamers based on sex is beyond me.

Terry's story line doesn't seem to fit with the others, but maybe it will tie together in the end?  And why must we introduce the faeries?  There is enough going on, Alan Ball!

I really liked the scene at the very end with Sookie and Alcide.  It was well done, even though her southern drawl faded out when she got really emotional.  On real southern people (this one, anyway), the opposite seems to hold true.

So, what did you think?!

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

Good morning!  I apologize for the lack of real blogging going on today, but I got a little busy this weekend with my reading, my cleaning, and my Texas Rangers baseball watching.  However, I have not forgotten last week's Shabby Apple giveaway deadline and the winner is....

5 Things Friday

Happy Friday!!  Hopefully all of you have survived another week of work.  This week has not been my favorite, but I have high hopes for the weekend and can't wait to relax... and help my husband sand walls and paint.   Luckily, I'll have a wine bar to show for it in the end.  Hopefully we'll finish everything and I can share photos next week.

Before the first weekend of summer gets underway, here are 5 things worth sharing:

1. I was instantly attracted to this hairdo on Pinterest because it's chic and actually executable!  I'm wearing it now!  Do it, long haired people!

2. I am wearing neon purple polish on my feet this week, and you'd think people had never seen such a thing.  So many compliments!  I love the change from my usual red and coral, and will definitely get this color again.  The closest I can find is Sinful Colors Dream On (#80), but I remember the bottle I picked in the salon was China Glaze.  First mint, now neon - look at me branching out!

3. What do we think about this recliner that doesn't actually look like one?  It doesn't look too comfortable, but hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised when I visit it in store.

4. Have you ever found a long-lost CD in your house, only to be delighted by songs you'd forgotten you loved?  That's me and The Decemberists album "The Crane Wife".  Listen to Shankill Butchers - it's basically a ghost story set to music.

 5. I hereby amend my assertion that Jamie from the Outlander books looks like the doctored photo of Gabriel Aubrey that I posted earlier this month.  He would actually look like Chris Hemsworth in Snow White and the Huntsman.  I'm sure this is amusing to only 4/800 of you, but I digress... good thing my e-friend Beth is around to discuss such important topics with me.

And with that, I bid you good weekend!

P.S. I realized today that I've not done any reader request posts in over a month!  Send me your style dilemmas and I'll see what I can do!

Mass Market Maxi Skirts

:::::::: Don't forget to enter to win a $50 Shabby Apple gift card by midnight tonight! ::::::::

Truth be told, I am a fan of any outfit where leg shaving is optional.  I also like looking feminine but not too fancy, which means I should be wearing maxi skirts all summer long.

Look how well these ladies do it!

However, I have trouble with this trend because I'm short and it's not recommended that anyone's skirt drag the ground as they traipse through the office.  Plus, I'm pretty curvy and unless the skirt waist hits just right, it looks like my body goes straight from boobs to hip with no waist in between.

Luckily, I'm nothing if not persistent when it comes to shopping and have found lots of cheap options at the major chain stores so I can avoid making an investment until I know I'll wear it often.

I'm really drawn to the green options, as well as the bright poppy orange skirt from Kohl's.  Hopefully I can find it in stock and give it a whirl (literally and figuratively)!

Are you a fan of long skirts, or is it a little too Amish lady for your tastes?  Tell me!
