This week I was really happy to get an email from Kate, one of many people whose work wardrobe consists of scrubs and thus lacks the constant "I can wear this to work" shopping excuse the rest of us use to justify purchases. (Or is that just me?)
Kate wants to be smart about her budget, but create a collection of pieces that are easily mixable so that she can wear them often and not amass a closet full of items that will only be worn a few times per year when the right weekend occasion comes around. I think this is probably a really common situation (that also applies if you're packing for a trip), so I was excited to help out.
If I were reapproaching my own weekend wardobe, here's what I would buy:
The shopping list:
- A pair of black pants and dark wash jeans you love (pick the cut that works best for you - I showed skinny here because that's what Kate already has)
- One pair of bright pants in a color that makes you happy
- A pair of tailored shorts in a saturated color (or black, if that's more your speed)
- A black skirt that hits a little above the knee so it doesn't look too office-ey, but not necessarily a mini. I like a comfy a-line shape that will look cute with flat sandals or heels
- Cardigans! Obviously I'm a fan, and having a basic black, leopard and jewel tone option will result in tons of combinations
- Base layers, such as striped tees and basic white tanks
- A girly blouse to wear with your various jeans and shorts for times when you want to be a little fancy
- A bright scarf that's light enough to wear with tees and shorts, as well as into the fall with your cardigans
- A casual black dress that can be dressed up with heels and jewelry, or down with sandals and a cardigan
- A chambray shirt and at least one oxford shirt (printed or not)
- Leopard ballet flats plus a neutral pair to wear with almost everything you own
As you can see, almost every piece here can be worn with any other and all can be styled multiple ways. Then, as time goes by you could add some great heels and a denim jacket, tailored blazer, and printed dresses in the color family you wear most. Easy!
Thanks for the great post idea, Kate! If anyone else has a shopping dilemma, send me an email. I love helping out!
