Things Every Girl Needs: Kitchen Essentials

Today I'm so excited to have Julie from the amazing blog Julip Made here to post about something every girl needs: essential kitchen items.  I love reading Julie's blog and fantasizing about whipping up great meals every night, and appreciate that she posts simple but impressive recipes that any of us could recreate.  Please go pay her a visit when you're done here and then resist the urge to grab a snack because you'll be hungry.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Hello Lovely Cardigan Junkie Readers, Julie from Julip Made here.  I adore Haley and her sense of style and often find myself following her work wardrobe advice to a tee!  I am delighted to be taking part in her “Things Every Girl Needs” series.  Today I’ll be sharing a few kitchen essentials that can help any girl (or guy) make the perfect meal.   My philosophy is that by using fresh ingredients and simple recipes/ techniques, anyone can make a fantastic, mouthwatering meal.  These tools can help you make that meal…

1. Chef’s Knife- The workhorse of the kitchen, this is probably one of, if not the most useful tool and one item that you should definitely not skimp on.  Several things to keep in mind when picking out your chef’s knife:  material (Japanese harder alloys versus German high carbon stainless steel), length (8”-10”), weight, and tang (the extension of the blade into the handle, which can provide strength and balance).  My advice would be to actually go to the store and test out the feel of the knife.  How the knife feels and how you hold the knife can really make a difference in the speed as well as comfort, especially when prepping lots of food.
2. Cutting board with grip- A good cutting board with grips can make prep work go more smoothly and help eliminate injuries caused by your cutting board shifting.  I’d also recommend getting at least two different colors of cutting boards (red for meats, other for veggies) If you don’t have a cutting board with rubber grips, place a damp dish towel beneath the cutting board so it doesn’t slide on the counter.
  Spicy Peanut-Ginger, Chicken, and Bok Choy Saladsitting in prep bowls
3. Microplane (grater/zester) -   This tool is a secret weapon in the kitchen used for adding flavor to a dish.  It can be used to zest citrus fruits, grate nutmeg for some spice, or grate cheese.  I especially love using lemon zest to add flavor instead of using such a heavy hand with salt.
4. Mixing and Prep Bowls-    One of the first things we were taught in my culinary class was to keep an organized “mise en place”.  This means to pretty much get all of your tools and ingredients set up and prepped before you cook so that while you are actually preparing the meal you aren’t running around the kitchen like a crazy person.  Mixing and prep bowls are essential to this process.
  Pesto made with KitchenAid mini-food processor
5. Food Processor- This is a great tool for expediting food prep and can be used to: slice and dice veggies; grind meats, spices, and nuts; and shredding meats, veggies or cheeses.  The food processor can also take the manual aspect out of tasks such as mixing or kneading doughs, and grinding sauces or spreads such as pesto or tapenade.
 Bacon Egg and Arugula Deep Dish Pizza made withcast iron skillet
6. Cast Iron Skillet- Another workhorse of the kitchen, because of its heat retention and diffusion properties, the skillet can be used for searing, frying, sautéing, stewing, and braising.  It can be used on the cook top, in the oven, or a combination of both.  My favorite, more recent discovery is to use the skillet to create delicious deep dish pizzas.
7. Dutch/French Oven- Also made out of cast iron, but covered in enamel, the Dutch or French Oven has the same heating properties as the skillet, but its deeper sides and lid make it more useful for stews, braises and sauces.  It also can be used on both the stovetop and the oven, making it a multi-purpose tool.
 Braised Beef Short-ribs and Potatoes Daphinois madewith Le Creuset French Oven

8. Tongs-  A relatively overlooked tool, tongs are a very useful tool and can be used for everything from turning meats in the pan, tossing salads, turning hot dishes, tossing veggies in the sauté pan, removing items from boiling water, and plating your cooked ingredients with accuracy.  There are many different types of tongs out there, but my favorite are the standard metal scalloped restaurant tongs pictured above.
As a foodie, my birthday and Christmas wish lists are often filled with kitchen tools, cookbooks, and appliances, most of which are definitely not essential for the kitchen.  Like I said before, you really only need a few basics to make great food, but of course there are some fun tools to experiment with.
9. Pasta Roller- Pasta is obviously a very accessible ingredient with most grocery stores even offering fresh pasta varieties.  However, in my opinion, if you have the time and equipment, home-made pasta is far superior in flavor and texture.  You can also play around with various flavorings and colors that really elevate your dish to the next level such as squid ink, beet juice, black olive, or wasabi pasta.
10. Silpat Mat-  Although not essential for baking, the silpat mat is a non-stick backing mat that also helps to insulate whatever you are baking from burning, helps cookies form their shape, and can even be used for frozen objects.
11. Mandoline- The mandolin can help if you are looking for very precise and even prep cuts such as various juliennes, crinkle cuts, or waffle cuts.  These can really add to the presentation of salads, beautify fried foods, and create pretty garnishes.
I hope this can help you all get started in the kitchen and stop by Julip Made if you want more recipes - including cocktail recipes !  Thank you again Haley for having me!
Xo, Julie

Things Every Girl Needs: An easy exercise routine

This week I'm so grateful for sweet blog friends like Sam from Fitness Food and Faith, who supplied an amazing guest post that I'm excited to share with you since so many of us make every possible excuse not to work out (or at least I do).  Sam's blog is a great source of advice for healthy eating and exercise, as well as inspiration.  It's one of my daily reads, so I encourage you to stop by and say hi!
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Hey Cardigan Junkie readers!  Sam here from fitness, food and faith.  I adore Haley’s blog and always find myself adding items to my home and clothing wish lists after reading it!  I’m really excited to be adding a little something to Haley’s “Things Every Girl Needs” series.  Although I’m not great with fashion and design, I love talking (and writing!) about health and fitness.  As a group exercise instructor, I have the privilege of being surrounded by fit and motivated people all the time; however, I realize not everyone has the luxury of time to spend at the gym, equipment to use at home, or even a schedule that allows a consistent workout regime.

I’ve come up with a routine that can be done by the stay at home mom, traveling business woman, broke college student, and anyone else in between!  All you’ll need is some floor space and perhaps a few tunes to pump you up.  So this is your anywhere-anytime-workout that will get your heart pumping and build muscle strength – it’s definitely something every girl needs!

Thanks so much for the great post, Sam!  I have printed it and am excited to have something I can do indoors while it's (literally) 110 degrees outside.  If anyone else would like to contribute a post to this series, send me an email and let me know!  I love meeting new bloggers!*

Things Every Girl Needs: A Go-To Party Dress

Today I'm excited to get back into the guest posting routine and welcome the lovely Emmy from the blog Sprinkles on Everything.  She has great style and I encourage you to check our her blog - it's full of preppy, girly inspiration!
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Hi everyone! I’m Emmy from Sprinkles on Everything and I am so excited to be a part of Things Every Girl Needs. I love Haley’s blog and especially this series. It is so cool to find out what other people deem as a necessity.
There are many things that I could write for this blog as I am a creature of habit and therefore have a lot of “needs” and things I use/eat/wear on a daily basis. This summer I am going to be a part of my first wedding ever. You know those people who are your “aunt” and “uncles” but they aren’t related? Well my “cousin” is getting married! I would actually deem her more of a “sister” as I am lacking a biological one but you get the point. If there is one thing I think every girl needs it would be a go-to party dress, one that can be dressed up for formal events or down for a more casual occasion.
I have learned over the years that shopping for a dress for a specific reason never proves productive. Instead, I now follow the motto that “if the dress fits, buy it” and somewhere down the road you will find a use for it. Whether it is for a sorority formal, a holiday cocktail party or an unexpected fancy date night, knowing you have the perfect dress stashed away provides peace of mind. Here are a few of my picks that I would love to keep on hand:
This J Crew dress is perfect in so many ways. The color and cut make it perfect for a summer night. I could see it being more formal when paired with a black heel and diamond studs or dressed down with a metallic pair of Jack Rogers and pearls.

I love Lilly Pulitzer and it has become my go-to store for summer dressing. The single shoulder on this dress adds drama which can be dressed up with a pair of nude heels or dressed down with gold flats. Though this dress doesn’t need to be belted, it sharpens your figure and ultimately makes it more flattering.

Michael Kors is a power house. There is little this man designs that I don’t instantly lust over. A little black dress is necessary in every girl’s wardrobe and I love LBD’s that are different. The side ruffle on this dress is fun and flirty. I would wear this dress all year long. In the winter with a sparkly statement necklace and bold heels or fun wedges in the summer.
***
Every person’s body is flattered by a different cut, color and fabric. My best advice I can give you is if you find a dress that makes you look drop-dead-gorgeous, buy it. Chances are when you need a pretty party dress the universe will be working against you but if you keep a small stock pile you will always be prepared.
Thanks so much Haley for having me guest post! Head on over to my blog to check out some other things that make me happy!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Emmy!  I am in love with that Lilly dress.  I got my first one-shoulder option this year and am loving it!

Things Every Girl Needs: A Well-Appointed Bed

Today I was feeling left out of the Things Every Girl Needs fun, so I'm adding yet another suggestion to the long list of must haves that my fellow bloggers have served up.  I think that every girl needs a proper, well-appointed bed!

There comes a time when a mattress on a frame and a 9 year old bedspread just doesn't cut it anymore.  As money allows, I think it's important to have a proper headboard and stylish bed linens that you aren't embarrassed for people to see if they take a tour of your house or apartment.  This doesn't mean you need a $500 headboard and $400 linens, and there are some awesome options out there for every budget.

Here are some of my favorite combos, depending on your style:

What style best describes your taste in bedroom decor?  The first option has both my dream bed and bedding, although option four is growing on me too!

Do you want to participate in this series?  I'm always looking for guest bloggers, so send me an email!

Things Every Girl Needs: Every Day Must Haves

This week I'm happy to welcome Megan from A Lived In Home.  She's a fellow Dallasite, and has begun writing a great decor blog that has become one of my daily reads.  She's here to post about some of the things that she thinks deserve a place in your makeup bag and closet.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I was thrilled when Haley asked me to guest post on her stylish blog. I do, after all, love my cardigans!

There are certain items that every girl needs to feel stylish and beautiful. Here are what I deem the must haves and non- negotiables!

Chanel Levres Scintillantes Glossimer $28.50. My go to color is Sea Shell and it's always in my make-up bag.

We must protect ourselves from the sun! I use this Neutrogena non-greasy sunblock for my face and body. It's lightweight enough to go under makeup.

Essie nail polish in Mademoiselle ($8)  is a timeless nail color and wearable for any special occasion.

Jo Malone makes a variety of delicious colognes that are appropriate for any age and smell so fresh. ($105)

A cute makeup bag to carry all the "goods" around- Kate Spade $65

Bellatrix Strapless Maxi Dress from Nordstrom

A fun and flirty maxi dress is comfortable and cool on a hot summer day. Us Texas girls know about the heat all too well!

A comfortable and classic black ballet flat is a must! This Tory Burch Reva Flat $195 is my personal favorite. They are so comfortable and conform to your feet over time.

Lastly, my Ray- Ban's are my favorite sunglasses and are affordable at $129.

Maybe you already have one of these items or will add one of them to your "want" list. After all, they are things that every girl needs!  Thanks to Haley for having me today!
xoxo Megan

Things Every Girl Needs: A Dressing Room

Today I'm really excited to have the lovely Rachael from the blog Roco Rennie taking part in the the Things Every Girl Needs series.  Her blog is one of my favorite destinations for gorgeous interiors and inspiration, as well as a peek into her life in Ireland.  Please give her a lovely welcome and follow her over at Roco Rennie - you'll be very glad that you did!
 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Hi Rachael from a little blog Roco Rennie here; I am so delighted to take part in this fantastic series on Cardigan Junkie. I came up with many “things that every girl needs” like friends but I decided to keep it on the same theme as Roco Rennie, interiors!!  So without further ado, I give you the dressing room:
More every girl SHOULD have instead of needs a walk in dressing room. The pure idea of a room just for your clothes is perhaps appealing to our inner child – how many of us played dress up with our mums clothes!!

Imagine owning all these shoes and having a bespoke unit for them!!!

I think everyone woman should have that one area in their home that is theirs for getting ready ~ whether it is a dressing room table, a chest of drawers or sitting on the floor on front of a mirror (uni days). Just that one spot where you can do the little things that make you feel better about yourself and able to face the day ahead.  How many of us feel so much better if we get the time to get ready for the day ahead!

 Thanks Haley for including me in this series, it was so much fun!!
 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
 Thanks for stopping by Rachael!  I have some serious closet envy now - those photos are amazing!
If you want to take part in this series, I've got slots open starting next week.  Just send me an email with what you'd like to write about and we'll arrange a date!
P.S. Since so many of you have asked, I'm working on an eBay 101 post with lots of detail on how you can sell your old clothes and get money for new ones  :)
