Dream Decorating: Gray Zebra

Ever since I found my pair of gray zebra pillow covers at a Wisteria warehouse sale, I've been looking at ways to integrate them into my house.  They're currently on the sofa, among other gray patterns, but I'm considering moving them into my bedroom for a while.  I love the pattern, and I think that the gray twist makes them even more neutral and usable, even though it's not quite what nature intended.

Here are a couple of my favorite rooms with gray zebra accents.  The bedroom is my new favorite, especially since it feature the main color palette in my house:

In case you're wanting some gray zebra in your house, here are a few things I found online that could help you get the same look (sadly, there wasn't much to be found):

What's your opinion on gray zebra?  Too wild or just right?  Or, is there another print that makes your heart sing?

My Favorite Fancy Flats

The arrival of September issues for all my magazines is one of my favorite times of year.  I love pretending, just for an hour, that it's not 100 degrees outside and that fall is almost here.  I especially can't wait for the transition to Fall footwear.  It's no secret to those who know me that I love me some ballet flats, despite being only 5' 4" and having a closet full of heels.  I do wish I were taller, but I accepted my stature long ago and often pick comfort over height when I'll be doing a lot of walking.

This fall I will be needing some more flats since my current collection is starting to look pretty sad, and I love all the new styles that are meant to be noticed.

Fancy flats

I'll be standing in line on September 13th for that Missoni pair, and am now quite fixated on an orange pair as well.  It's too bad that most of the options I found are way above my budget!

Are you a fan of fancy flats?  What's on your list for fall?

Reader Request: London Calling

Hello ladies - I hope everyone had a nice weekend!  For the first time in a long time, I didn't have anything that I had to do and it was wonderful.  I watched movies, ran errands, and made strawberry champagne cocktails just because I felt like it.  And now it's back to the grind, and back to reviving my poor little health and fitness routine since a super stressful 8 weeks has led to a 5 lb weight gain.  I will be doing no shopping until September 13th when Target gets Missoni items and I'm back to my normal size, so until then I must make do with shopping for other people.

Luckily, I have a few reader request emails waiting for a writeup, and I've been super excited about this one from Beth, who is moving from San Antonio, TX to London.  She needs a fall to winter wardrobe, and wants to stock up on basics before she leaves since the UK can be pricy.  I'm so envious of her situation, since not staying in London after my college internship is one of my big regrets.  I'm hoping to make it back for an extended period of time one day, but my stint there makes me oddly qualified for this request.  That said, here's what I learned and what I think Beth should bring with her:

London Accessories-Outerwear

Since Beth and her husband don't plan to have a car, she'll be doing a lot of walking.  That means some serious shoes.  I will say that I didn't have any idea how sturdy my shoes needed to be since in Texas we walk from the car to a door and back again.  A lot of my (cheap) shoes either fell apart or hurt my feet, and I have learned my lesson.  Since Fall and Winter are boot season, I think Beth needs a great pair of flat riding boots as well as a stylish pair of waterproof boots for the inevitable rainy days when she has to make her way across town.  I highly recommend Corso Como boots for durability and comfort, and found a great pair of lined rubber boots that don't look like wellies.  She will also need a pair of foldable flats for her commute to work (Gap city flats for the win!), and a great bag to hold her heels, and some reading material for the train.  She'll also need a couple of coats - knee length and hip length options - to keep things interesting since she'll be wearing some sort of jacket pretty much every single day.  (Plus, if she's like me, she may go around announcing that it's cold while everyone else laughs at her because we don't have proper cold in Texas until January)

London Outfits - Fall

As far as clothing goes, Beth will probably want to wear a lot of layers.  I like thin layers to better fit under coats, such as blouses and cardigans with a scarf.  I picked some colorful cardigans, some pretty blouses, a sweater coat, some thin sweater tunics to wear with leggings (or jeggings, if she is that type), a drapey dress in a rich fall color, and some basic work trousers.  Everything can be mixed and matched, and she'll get a lot of mileage out of every item.  I'd also caution against going too crazy and stocking up on clothes because the transition from car culture to pedestrian city usually means weight loss (at least it did with me - until I got home).  If Beth needs more later, she can have all her US purchases shipped to a friend or family member and then shipped over.  However, all the amazing stores in London will make that unlikely!  I'm so jealous that she'll get to shop at Uniqlo, the flagship Topshop, and find cool indie designers at the markets on weekends.

I also think Beth should start a blog so I can live vicariously through her adventure!   What would the rest of you recommend for someone making the transition from Texas to London?

O'bsessed with O'verlays

I know that everyone and her cousin who has a blog about interiors has already written about O'verlays this month, but a lot of the people who visit this page every day are not big blog readers (Hi Mom's friends!) and I am so excited about this product I have to share it.

The concept is that you can now buy pre-cut, paintable pieces of fretwork that are made to be affixed to Ikea furniture and completely transform it into something special.  The company was started by two designers (and bloggers) who recognized a hole in the market, and offered an inexpensive solution.  The panels are around $20 each, and I can't wait to get some!

I am obsessed with the large greek key pattern on a night stand, like in the first photograph.  I plan to get a Rast chest (the unfinished, $35 option) and 3 strips of the greek key fretwork.  I'll probably do a gray and white paint scheme, for optimum reusability throughout the house, but a cobalt and white pattern is also pretty appealing.   I would also love to do a colorful combination in a kid's room one day - there are so many possibilities!

So, who else is excited now?!

Dream Decorating: Kitchen Refresh

One of my resolutions after I got married was to improve my cooking skills, and I'm lucky to live in a house with a nicely remodeled kitchen that should make me want to turn on the stove and start mixing.  But it doesn't.  Maybe if I added some of these items to spruce things up a bit, I would want to do more than bake?

I think I may actually get those tea towels, since my kitchen can use some color.  I'm also loving that white bowl for my dining table, though I'm not sure what I'd put in it since I don't like to leave fruit sitting out.  However, my dream item would be the Kitchenaid mixer since I make do without one, even when recipes instruct me to use it.  Le sigh.

What's your favorite item in your kitchen?

If I had $1,000... Anthropologie Fall Favorites

It's no secret that most women in America would go nuts in Anthropologie if given the chance.  I visited one of the Dallas stores on Friday and hit the jackpot in the sale room, scoring a cardigan I've admired for months for $40.  However, there were tons of other items I'd have loved to have if only I could justify the prices, which are still pretty high to me.  Luckily, I've got some birthday money to spend and am thinking about some of the pieces below - which one should I pick?

Anthropologie - Fall 2011 Favorites

I was also super lucky to get both of these necklaces for my birthday this year, and can't wait to finish off my outfits with such unique pieces.  My boss and my husband are the best!
